It was only a matter of time before Olivier Giroud opened his goalscoring account for Chelsea.
Having fired blanks against Watford and West Brom, it was third time lucky for the Frenchman as he scored the fourth goal in Friday night’s 4-0 win over Hull City in the FA Cup.
Fellow new boy Emerson Palmier did extremely well to worm his way into the box before crossing for Giroud, who produced a tidy flicked finish.
“To be honest, I was waiting for it,” Giroud told BT Sport at full time. “I had a couple of chances in the previous game. It was very important for me to score this first goal.
“It relieves me a little bit. I assisted Eden [Hazard] last time and today I set up Willian’s one and I’m very happy. I take a lot of pleasure on the pitch.”
Giroud cost Chelsea just £18 million and early signs suggest he will adapt seamlessly to Antonio Conte’s system.
The 31-year-old has already established a good report with the likes of Hazard and Willian and it would appear he’s on the same wavelength as one other teammate: Willy Caballero.
Caballero produced another superb penalty save against Hull and Chelsea fans have noticed Giroud played an important role in the block.
In the video below, just as David Meyler starts his run-up, Giroud correctly points to Cabellero’s right to help him make the save.
