It was confirmed this month that Lionel Messi has signed a new contract with Barcelona until 2021, with a staggering release clause of 700million euros.





Barcelona had announced in July that a new deal was agreed, but the player’s signature was yet to be put.
On November 25 it was finally announced, with Messi putting pen on the contract which will keep him at Camp Nou until the summer of 2021.




With it came a staggering €700million (£626million) release clause.

But why it took so long to be signed?
Well, the Mirror are reporting that the original agreement featured a 300million release clause.
But then Neymar joined Paris Saint-Germain for a world record fee of 222million euros.

That’s because the Argentine’s 300million euros release clause wasn’t untouchable anymore, and this forced new negotiations
