CRISTIANO RONALDO has reportedly told Real Madrid’s hierarchy that they should target Kylian Mbappe over his Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Neymar.
That’s according to Diario Gol, who say that Ronaldo is opposed to the signing of the former Barcelona forward due to his star status.
The Spanish publication report that Ronaldo wishes to remain the undisputed leading figure at the Bernabeu and has therefore named another PSG attacker, in Mbappe, as the man he wants to see signed to replenish their front-line.
Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale’s uncertain futures have suggested that Real Madrid will spend big this summer, with Neymar said to be high on the list of targets for president Florentino Perez - who is a huge fan of the Brazilian.
But added to Ronaldo’s fears of being overshadowed, he supposedly does not want a new signing to surpass his sky-high wages - with Diario Gol declaring that in addition to the €250million (£216m) Real would have to pay PSG, Neymar would also command a €50m (£43m) signing on fee.
Therefore, the Portuguese ace has championed the acquisition of France international Mbappe - arguably the best teenage talent on the planet.
The 19-year-old enjoyed an electric first full season with Monaco in 2016-17 with his 26 goals across all competitions helping them to dethrone PSG as Ligue 1 champions.
But his form saw Les Perisiens spend £166m - once Mbappe’s year-long loan at Parc des Princes ends this summer - on the prodigious youngster.
And PSG have already reclaimed their league title, doing so with an emphatic 7-1 home win over Monaco at the weekend - even without Mbappe and the injured Neymar.
Mbappe has scored 19 goals and laid on 17 assists in 40 appearances this term and Ronaldo believes he would be a better fit for Real’s front three than Mbappe.
Diario Gol even state that the 33-year-old thinks Neymar has reached his ceiling while the young Frenchman - despite his sensational form for the past two years - has plenty of potential yet to realise and would be satisfied with waiting to become the team’s star until Ronaldo leaves.
Despite his desire to sign Neymar, Perez is thought to be willing to sign Mbappe to keep Ronaldo happy while he would also offer a higher return off the pitch.
