Leno joined Arsenal from Bayer Leverkusen in June for a fee of around £19million.
The 26-year-old largely shared the responsibilities between the sticks in pre-season with last season’s No 1 Petr Cech.
However, it was Cech who was given the nod for the opening Premier League game of the campaign on Sunday.
The former Chelsea man put in an unconvincing performance in the 2-0 loss to Manchester City.
Cech was visibly uncomfortable with new boss Emery’s tactics of playing out from the back
They spent €22m on a goalkeeper and he’s going to sit on the bench
.And former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton has questioned why Emery would spend so much on a goalkeeper in Leno to just put him on the bench.
“I think some keepers are better than others (at playing out),” Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 Live.
“I actually think it was a big call, Petr Cech over Leno.
They spent €22m on a goalkeeper and he’s going to sit on the bench.
“I don’t think Petr Cech had a good season last season.
“So I think it is a risk if Arsenal are going to play that way and the way Emery wants them to play, playing out from the back.
“But he clearly didn’t tell Petr Cech to make such a mess up as he did.
I think it’s interesting, I think I read in the paper somewhere today that Emery’s backing Cech as his No 1.
I’m not so sure he’s got that right.”
Arsenal's next match is against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge this Saturday.
The Blues won their opening fixture 3-0 when they visited Huddersfield last Saturday.
