There were emotional scenes on Sunday night as the great Andres Iniesta played his final Clasico.
The 33-year-old, who will leave Barcelona at the end of the season, was on the pitch for 58 minutes against Real Madrid before he was subbed off for Paulinho.
Iniesta received a standing ovation from the packed Camp Nou crowd, who will always regard the Spain international as one of the club’s greatest ever players, as he made his way to the dugout.
He now has three matches left before his 22-year association with the Catalan giants comes to an end.
Between now and the end of the season, Barça take on Villarreal, Levante and Real Sociedad. Avoid defeat in those games and they’ll have gone the entire season unbeaten.
But what’s next for Iniesta?
Well, the veteran midfielder was expected to move to the Chinese Super League this summer but fresh reports suggest he could be off to either Japan or Australia instead. Either way, he’s made up his mind to leave his current employers.
INIESTA HAS THE RESPECT OF ALL HIS TEAMMATES
“This is best club in the world,” Iniesta said at a tearful press conference last month, per the Independent.
“I wanted to be honest with myself. I’ve been here since I was 12 years old. If I couldn’t contribute everything I was capable, then it was time to say goodbye. I don’t want to make anybody uncomfortable.
“I want to say thank you to the club and La Masia, which made me who I am. I want to thank all my team-mates, and my family, especially my wife and my three children, my treasures. Finally, I want to thank the fans, who have been with me through and thick and thin.”
Because of his qualities as a footballer combined with his modest character, Iniesta has the respect of each and every one of his teammates, who will all miss him dearly.
VIDEO: WHAT INIESTA SAID TO MESSI DURING THE CLASICO
Lionel Messi is obviously no exception – and there was a touching moment between the two greats as Iniesta made his way off the pitch during Sunday’s Clasico.
Per ESPN, Iniesta was spotted saying to Messi while handing him the captain’s armband: “Here Leo… I love you so much.
