Superstars Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are usually compared to one another for what they do on the field, but a new report has shown the Argentine will earn far more money than his Portuguese rival this season.
According to France Football‘s latest figures, Argentina and FC Barcelona forward Messi is the best paid footballer in the world.
The publication claims that, by the end of the season, the 30-year-old will have earned £110 million (R1.8 billion) when bonuses, major sponsorship deals and gross wages are taken into account.
It is said that Messi will also become the first player to earn more than £100 million (R1.7 billion) in a single season, while Real Madrid’s Ronaldo is set to earn £82 million (R1.4 billion) by the end of the 2017/18 campaign.
The massive deal the Argentine signed with Barca in November, reportedly worth £500 000 (R8.5 million) a week, is believed to have been the main factor in Messi regaining the top spot.
Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil attacker Neymar is said to be the third highest paid footballer, according to France Football, and will reportedly earn £71 million (R1.2 billion) over the course of the season.
