That’s the claim of Transfer Window podcast guest Ian McGarry.
He says the defender is well liked by the Blues owner, who wanted him
to become John Terry’s long-term successor at the back.
Antonio Conte dropped Luiz for the club’s last game, the 1-0 win over
Manchester United.
And McGarry says that was the Chelsea manager sticking up two fingers
to his boss.
“David Luiz was returned to Chelsea because he’s one of Roman
Abramovich’s favourite players,” he said on the podcast.
“He was not neccassarily the
choice of anyone at the club on
the coaching staff.

“He’s loved by the owner of the
club who saw him as the long-
term successor to John Terry as
captain of the club, and the fact
Gary Cahill remains as captain
instead of Luiz is still the matter
of debate in Roman Abramovich’
box every second weekend when
they play at home.
“That was two fingers to Roman Abramovich by dropping him from the
squad completely.”
Luiz could sit out again when Chelsea return to Premier League duty on
Saturday.
The defending champions travel to West Brom on Saturday with the
Brazilian well rested after not getting a call-up from his country during
the international break.
But Andreas Christiansen replaced Luiz against United and could keep his
place after impressing with a clean sheet.
